  • The orange plant is native to Southeast Asia. Different varieties were grown all over India, dating back around 7000 years. Historians also believe that the orange was grown in China around the beginning of the 1st century. Noble families became very partial to this wonderful new fruit, causing the farmers who produced the orange crops to compete, with each one trying to produce bigger and tastier varieties. During the 1st century, Persian traders introduced the orange to the Roman Empire. Romans went on to grow the first orchard of oranges in North Africa around this time. Much later, during the 16th century, oranges were brought to Europe by Portuguese traders, and later still they were introduced to America by the Spanish.

Today, Brazil is the leading producer of oranges, producing almost half of the world’s total production. However, most of the orange essential oil is produced in France, Italy, Israel, Cyprus and the United States.
