  • The history of the grapefruit is somewhat shrouded in mystery. It is said that, during the 18th century, seeds from the Pomelo fruit were left in either Jamaica or Barbados (it’s not exactly clear which) and that this allowed for the creation of the grapefruit. Rev. Griffith Huges mentioned the grapefruit in the book “Natural History of Barbados” in 1750, where the name was literally translated as ‘forbidden fruit’. It is also believed that the grapefruit could be a hybrid of the Sweet Orange and the Pomelo, but there is no proven record of this. To add a little more mystery to the grapefruits true beginnings, citron seeds were first found during an excavation of the ancient Sumerian city of Nippur.

Today, grapefruit is grown in the U.S, China, India, South Africa and in some South American countries.
